Celebrating 30 Years of Keeping You Cool and Comfortable

How To Lower Your Energy Bill This Winter

Will your family be warm enough this winter? The shifts in weather this year have made wintry events harder to predict, and it’s imperative to prepare your home for extreme winter temperatures as soon as possible. Here are a few ways to make your home comfortable and energy efficient.

4 Ways To Save Money on Energy Bills

1) Check / Replace Your Furnace Filter

If you’ve read any of our other blog posts, you’ll start to see a theme developing. An extremely dirty or clogged furnace filter can cause your furnace to work harder than needed and waste valuable energy in the process. Check and/or replace your furnace filter once a month, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

2) Turn Down the Setting

The simplest way to save on your heating bill is to turn down the heat to the lowest setting you feel comfortable with. According to energy.gov, turning the temperature down an additional 10 – 15° F for 8 hours while you are sleeping or away can help save about 10% a year on your energy costs.

3) Ceiling Fans Help

This might be simple but because hot air rises, running your ceiling fan in reverse will bring it back down to floor level. That will keep your rooms warm.

4) Insulate Your Home Properly

Put your zip code into the Department of Energy’s insulation tool to find out how much insulation your home needs. Then, add to your existing insulation as needed.

Wrapping It Up

Your heating system, any supplemental heating devices and insulation all require consistent maintenance to operate at their highest capacity and keep your home warm at the most reasonable cost.

Certain tasks you can perform yourself include changing HVAC filters, sealing drafts and weatherstripping your windows and doors. You may want to have your central furnace serviced professionally, however. Contact Southern Pride Service to see how we can help you!
