Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are you licensed and insured?

A: Yes, we are licensed and insured. Our Maryland HVACR license: #18273 and our Virginia HVACR license is #2705143865.

Q: What does HVAC mean?

A: HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning, the three functions of providing comfort in your home or a building. Each of these provides thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. Southern Pride Service is a Southern Maryland and Northern Virginia HVAC contractor.

Q: How often should my equipment be serviced?

A: Your HVAC equipment should be inspected, cleaned, and serviced at least once a year. However, for improved performance and equipment life, we suggest having the heating system checked in the fall and the air conditioning checked in the spring. If you have Oil-fired equipment, it should be cleaned at the beginning of each heating season.

Q: How often should I change my equipment's air filters?

A: Replacing filters regularly helps to improve the performance of your system and indoor air quality. Southern Pride Service recommends that you replace disposable filters or clean washable filters each month.

Q: If my HVAC system isn't working, what should I check before placing a service request?

A: First, check that the air conditioner or furnace is turned on. Next, check that the breakers and the disconnects are turned on and be sure the thermostat is set correctly. Then check for strange smells and unusual noises.

Q: Can a geothermal heat pump be added to my gas furnace?

A: You want a dual-fuel heating system, you can easily add split systems easily to your existing fossil-fuel furnace. A dual-fuel system will use the heat pump as the main heating source and the fossil fuel furnace as a supplement in extremely cold weather, if additional heat is needed.

Q: Will my current ductwork work with a Geothermal system?

A: Southern Pride Service will determine ductwork requirements and any minor modifications, if needed.

Q: How long is the payback period for a geothermal system?

A: You'll need to know how much you'll save each year in energy costs with a geothermal system. Therefore, you will need to calculate the price difference between the Geothermal installation  and an ordinary heating system and central air conditioner. Compare the results to how long you plan to live in your home or value added to the sale of your home to help make the decision to move to Geothermal.

Example: if your utility use savings is $700 per year with a geothermal system and the price difference is $2,000 between it and your old HVAC system, your payback will be less than three years. However, if you install a geothermal system in a new home, the monthly savings in operating costs most likely will offset the additional monthly cost of the mortgage.
